As one of three designated marketplaces in Pierre L’Enfant’s plan for Washington, D.C., Western Market was once a hub for both commerce and community for Washingtonians. The iconic rowhouses that distinguish this block have lived through many iterations, from Red Lion Row to 2000 Penn, and now an elevated work and lifestyle experience introduces a new vitality and returns to L’Enfant’s original purpose. In 2018, MRP purchased and realized the need to attract more diverse tenants and activate the interior marketplace and exterior streetscape. After enlisting Gensler to reposition the historic rowhouses, interior retail space, and office building lobby at the ground level, Western Market now preserves its history while embracing modern-day demands via a bustling food hall and contemporary workplace entrance that brings activity seven days a week.
